Chitin presents fundamental information on chitin. The enzymatic processes controlling the synthesis and the breakdown of chitin are discussed, along with its role in the fundamental mechanism of growth, differentiation, nutrition, and movement of a large number of species. This text consists of seven chapters and begins with an overview of chitin research and the rapidly increasing interest in chitin chemistry and applications. The discussion then moves to the enzymatic synthesis of chitin and chitosan and inhibition of chitin biosynthesis, along with the physicochemical characteristics of chitin and chitosan. The chapters that follow focus on chitin chemistry, chitinases and related enzymes, applications of chitin in chromatography, and industrial production and applications of chitin. The final chapter is devoted to medical applications of chitin and its oligomers, from being artificial kidney membranes and antigens against parasites to blood anticoagulants, biodegradable pharmaceutical carriers, wound healing accelerators, and microbiological media. This book will be of interest to biochemists, physicists, industrialists, botanists, entomologists, physiologists, and other scientists in a variety of disciplines, as well as graduate students wishing to undertake research about chitin.

A natural long-chain polymer, chitin is the main component of the cell walls of fungi, the exoskeletons of arthropods (including crustaceans and insects), the radulas of mollusks, and the beaks and internal shells of cephalopods. However, marine crustacean shells are the primary sources of the chitin derivative chitosan. Chitin and chitosan are useful for various biological and biomedical applications, although they have been limited by poor solubility in the past. Current research focuses on increasing their solubility and bioactivity through molecular modifications. The resulting derivatives are receiving much attention for interesting properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and nontoxicity, that make them suitable for use in the biomedical field. Chitin and Chitosan Derivatives: Advances in Drug Discovery and Developments presents current research trends in the synthesis of chitin and chitosan derivatives, their biological activities, and their biomedical applications. Part I discusses basic information about the synthesis and characterization of a variety of derivatives, including the preparation of chitin nanofibers. Part II covers chitin and chitosan modifications as the basis for biological applications. It describes antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, anticoagulant, and antimicrobial activities. Part III addresses chemically modified and composite materials of chitin and chitosan derivatives for biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, nanomedicine, drug delivery, and wound dressing. A must-have reference for novices and experts in biotechnology, natural products, materials science, nutraceuticals, and biomedical engineering, this book presents a wide range of biological and biomedical applications of chitin and chitosan derivatives for drug discovery and development.

Allergic and parasitic helminth immunity is characterized by infiltration of tissues with IL-4- and IL-13-expressing cells, including Th2 cells, eosinophils and basophils. Additionally, tissue macrophages assume a distinct phenotype, designated alternatively activated macrophages. Relatively little is known regarding the early factors that trigger these host responses, however we do know that these host responses depend on Stat6 signaling downstream of IL-4 and IL-13 receptors.

Chitin, Chitosan, and Related Enzymes documents the proceedings of a four-day joint United States-Japan seminar held at the University of Delaware. The said seminar is aimed to explore the potential of the application of chitin, chitosan, and related products in different scientific fields. The book is divided into six parts. Part I covers the application of chitin and chitosan to pharmaceutical preparations. Part II discusses the applications of chitin and its derivatives. Part III features chitin and chitosan in relation to enzymology and genetic engineering. Respectively covered in Parts IV, V, and VI are the chemical and physical structure of chitin and chitosan; biochemical and physiological properties of chitin and its derivatives; the effects of phosphate on chitin production; and the development of chitin as a suture as well as for orthopedic uses. The text is recommended for biochemists who would like to know more or make further studies about the different applications of chitin, chitosan, and related enzymes.

The opportunity to explore a developing new technology in a single biological system, chitin, from the molecular basis and with the inter relationship of the utilization of benzoylphenyl ureas in effective pest agroecosystem management strategies, represents a new evolution for integration of knowledge in this highly complex area. The degree of great progress and interest in the understanding of the interaction of chitin uItrastructures, biochemistry, and the unique ben zoylphenyl ureas attest to the timeliness of this effort. The purpose of the book that follows is to provide up-to-date and well illustrated details of current research knowledge including the latest of research results. The combination of the basic to the applied aspects rarely occurs specifically at the levels presented by the international contributors within. The original contributions composed the symposium "Chitin and Ben zoylphenyl Urea" organized by the co-editors at the International Con gress of Entomology in Hamberg, Germany, August 1984. We extend our appreciation to everyone who made the conference an outstanding success and highlight of the Congress, as well as making this book possible. We thank the authors, especially for their excellent international presenta tions, discussions, and preparation of the manuscripts. The knowledge evolved from many areas in chitin research, as well as the intricate com plexity of successful utilization of specific knowledge involving benzoylp henyl ureas in system management strategies for insects will continue to be in the forefront throughout the world's agroecosystems; and hopefully this book will enhance further research and development.
